Relationship between serum uric acid level and triglyceride in middle-aged and elderly population in Hotan district of Xinjiang

    • Objective To investigate the relationship between uric acid (UA) and triglyceride (TG) in Uygur middle-aged and elderly people in Hotan district of Xinjiang. Methods Stratified sampling and complete randomization were used to select 1356 long-term residents aged over 40 in Hotan District of Xinjiang. The subjects were divided into two groups according to gender, then according to the diagnostic criteria of hyperuricemia, each group was divided into UA subnormal group and high UA subgroup, finally, based on the three percentile of UA normal groups, they were divided into three layers, thus forming four layers with different UA levels. Single factor analysis and multivariate Logistics regression analysis were used to investigate the relationship between UA level and TG.Results UA levels were positively correlated with TG in the general population (r=0.165, P < 0.01), and there was a gender difference in the correlation with other indexes. Single factor analysis of UA and TG showed that there were significant differences in TG levels between UA layers of different genders (P < 0.01). With the increase of UA level, the level of TG in male and female increased significantly, and the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia also increased significantly (P < 0.01). The Logistics regression analysis results of hypertriglyceridemia and UA revealed that as compared with the first layer, the probability of hypertriglyceridemia at second, third and fourth layers increased by 1.004 times, 1.203 times, and 2.061 times respectively in female group. In male group, the probability of hypertriglyceridemia at third and fourth layers increased by 0.809 times and 4.232 times respectively as compared with the first layer (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the probability of hypertriglyceridemia between the first and second layers in male group. These findings suggest that UA is independently associated with hypertriglyceridemia, and this phenomenon is prominent in women. Conclusions There is a correlation between UA and TG in Uygur middle-aged and elderly people in Hotan district of Xinjiang. With the increase of UA level, the risk of hypertriglyceridemia is increased. The prevention of hyperuricemia and enhancement of comprehensive prevention and control of risk factors will reduce the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and decrease the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
